In 2005, Chris McCarus created Michigan Now, the only independent radio series in the state’s National Public Radio (NPR) system. Michigan Now was originally funded by Lansing-based Public Sector Consultants and the Michigan State University Land Policy Institute. Additional assistance has come from the Community Economic Development Association of Michigan (CEDAM), the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA), and Issue Media Group (IMG). McCarus has spent two decades in the public information business—with CBS Radio News New York, WNBC New York, The United Nations New York, the New York City Public schools, and the BBC World Service in Africa. A Peace Corps volunteer in Togo West Africa, he grew up in Birmingham, Michigan, and is a graduate of Michigan State University’s James Madison College.
