Former White House adviser Van Jones spoke in Detroit yesterday to about 300 people at a green jobs conference. One of his ideas for fixing Detroit is just the opposite of city leaders’ plans. Michigan Now’s Chris McCarus reports.
Detroit’s chief of public schools wants to demolish 10 schools by June. Mayor Bing wants to demolish 10,000 buildings by 2014. Van Jones says demolition breaks his heart. He spoke to a group called Green Nation at the restored Double Tree Hotel. It was abandoned for 16 years and almost got the wrecking ball.
“I keep hearing a word that makes me feel that all this talk about green is for naught. I keep hearing a word that I hope can be removed from the vocabulary of any leader in this city. And that word is demolition.”
Jones wrote a book called The Green Collar Economy. He was forced out of his mid-level White House job last year. Talk show host Glenn Beck revealed that in 2004, Jones signed a petition. The petition questioned what federal officials knew about the 9/11 attacks before they happened.
