Detroit music icon says artists best fit to revive city

Posted to MichiganNow.org on Tuesday, November 24, 2009

INTRO: This Friday in London England… The ska band The Specials will perform the final show of their 30 anniversary reunion tour. Most of you can’t go. But you remember the mixed race band that grew out of the grunge of Coventry, the Detroit of the UK.  The auto industry has withered in both towns. But the music has helped temper racism and keep a sense of community.

Michigan Now’s Chris McCarus talked to a former member of the Specials in Coventry, Charley Bembridge.  He’s now in a ska revival band called the AllSkas.  McCarus also met Mick Collins, one of Detroit’s music icons.  Both musicians say Coventry has some lessons for Detroit.
